NSW: Home owners warned to beef up security this Christmas

NRMA Insurance has urged residents to take extra precautions during Christmas breaks, after the release of figures showing the silly season's a time of increased burglaries.

The latest figures from the New South Wales Bureau of Crime Statistics and Researchshow there were 8,056 reports of home robbery in the state in January 2001.

That was a jump of around 2,000 reports over previous months.

A spokesman for the bureau says the increase is because many holiday makers often returnfrom their Christmas break in January to find they've been robbed.

NOLA WATSON, NRMA Insurance's head of fraud and security risk, says research has foundthat one in five robberies take place when no-one's home.

She says installing double key deadlocks on doors and key locks on windows are essentialto ward off invaders.
