WA: Regional soccer club fined for allowing smoking
A regional soccer club has become the first body to fall foul of West Australian anti-smoking
laws.
The Bunbury United Soccer Club has been fined $2,500 in the Bunbury magistrate's court
after pleading guilty to two counts of allowing smoking in an enclosed place.
It's the first prosecution under new WA health regulations introduced in January 1999,
which restrict smoking in enclosed public places.
Under the rules, a limited number of hospitality venues can apply for exemptions.
A WA health department spokesman says the prosecution followed public complaints about
smoking at the club.
