PUNITIVE DAMAGES OPINION IS `IMMORAL'.

To the editor: This is in response to the July 19 editorial, ``Put Brake on Punitive Awards,'' regarding the huge jury award against General Motors Corp. Because the article is listed under ``Opinion'' I respect the author's right to his or her opinion, but I do want to rebut portions of the justifications used to support that opinion.

Referring to GM's money being spent by the jury indicates the deep prejudice contained in the article. The jury made a punitive damage decision. Punitive damages are the one way a jury can fine a defendant a sum significant enough to compel the tortfeasor to change its ways. GM is a huge worldwide corporation. Its assets would make it …
