Oly: Church groups protest over drag queens

An American religious group with close ties to the Catholic church has called on the
official US Olympic broadcaster NBC to avoid coverage of drag queens at the closing ceremonies
of the Sydney Games.

Virginia-based Human Life International has joined the protests against the recreation
of scenes from the hit Australian movie, The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert.

The group's communications director ANDY BLOM says the inclusion of a salute to drag
queens in the Games closing ceremony is a serious affront to family values.

He says it's not a question about freedom of expression or viewer sophistication, but
whether parents should have to explain the idea of a drag queen to young children.

The group claims to be the largest pro life, pro faith and pro family church group
in the world with more than 50 chapters in the US and representatives working in over
80 countries.

Mr BLOM says the Olympics isn't an appropriate venue for a drag queen show and he's
urged NBC to switch off when the gay icons take the field.
